Welcome to our Community Spotlight, a bi-monthly update of programs and activities that Saint Anthony Hospital participates in for the education and benefit of our area stakeholders.

Community Wellness Program Creates New Initiatives For Families
Saint Anthony Hospital recently revamped its Community Wellness Program to more strategically meet the needs of the community through a comprehensive set of services in four target areas. At its core, the program promotes healthier prenatal outcomes, sound developmental outcomes for young children, positive family functioning and, overall, healthier communities.
“When we reviewed our current Community Wellness Programs last year, one of our main goals was to ensure that we are providing the best and most needed resources to the community,” says Jim Sifuentes, Vice President, Mission and Community Development. “Our community is always changing, and it’s important that we remain as flexible as possible.” With that in mind, Saint Anthony Hospital has taken the best of already-existing programs, such as prenatal classes, and added timely and essential new services.

Saint Anthony Hospital Hosts Community Dialogue To Battle Youth Violence
“Teen violence does not discriminate. It does not care whether you are a Latino, an African American or part of another group,” said Jim Sifuentes, Vice President of Mission and Community Affairs, addressing a group of more than 35 community leaders who participated in a June 17, 2009 Community Dialogue on Youth Violence from a Religious Perspective at Saint Anthony Hospital. The event specifically focused on the North and South Lawndale neighborhoods that border Saint Anthony Hospital’s location at 2875 W. 19th St.
As Chicagoans are painfully aware, youth violence plagues the city. A total of 510 people were murdered in Chicago in 2008, according to research conducted by the University of Chicago. Eighty percent of those victims were killed by gunfire, and nearly half of them were between the ages of 10 and 25. Gang-related violence poses the largest threat; 11 gangs are active in the Chicago’s 10th District, where Saint Anthony Hospital is located, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Saint Anthony Hospital Strengthens Community Relationships Through Art Exhibit, “The African Presence in Mexico”
Saint Anthony Hospital sits on the border of the North Lawndale and Pilsen neighborhoods, making it a natural location for community building among the largely Latino and African American families it serves in 13 different Chicago communities, including North and South Lawndale, Lower West, Pilsen, Little Village and Back of the Yards.
Using art and culture as a springboard to help young people better understand their neighbors, Saint Anthony Hospital hosted a teen forum for African-American and Latino high school students on April 2, 2009. It was presented in conjunction with the National Museum of Mexican Art, based on the museum’s exhibit, “The African Presence in Mexico.” A portion of the exhibit currently is on display at the hospital.

Saint Anthony Hospital Inaugurates Its “School At Work” Program
Addressing the need for an increasingly skilled workforce at all levels – particularly in its culturally diverse healthcare environment – Saint Anthony Hospital in Chicago is launching a “School at Work” program. The “Building a Career Ladder in Healthcare” curriculum is a career development program for entry-level workers in the healthcare industry. The two-course, 32-week program – at no cost to employees – features on-site instruction offered both before and after work. The goal: to help employees advance in their career paths, prepare for college and maximize their workplace potential.
“As a community hospital, we are committed to embracing the community, and that certainly includes our workforce,” says Saint Anthony Hospital CEO Guy Medaglia. “We want to help them succeed. Overall, our entry-level employees display a very strong work ethic and commitment to patients. By offering them education through School At Work, they will broaden their skill sets, and ultimately, help us provide a higher level of patient care.”

Saint Anthony Hospital Unveils New Emergency Department
It is a gusty Friday morning. The pavement is blanketed with sheets of ice, and the bliss of feeling warmth gone. Yet, staff members of Saint Anthony Hospital have much to smile about and be thankful for this year. "We are really excited to have extended our services to the people of this community," said Saint Anthony Hospital CEO Guy A. Medaglia. Medaglia refers to the new emergency department that was unveiled on Friday, December 12, 2008.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, residents were invited to view the new 6,600 square-foot emergency department complete with 16 private patient rooms, an increase from the previous 12. The new department is fully equipped to facilitate various situations with their new PACS, Picture Archiving Communication System, technology that enables the emergency department and other physicians to view X-ray and other imaging films directly in the emergency unit or, in some instances, their homes.
